Basil - the Queen of Herbs

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Doug Green Basil, (Ocimum basilicum), has been around for a long time and was originally named by Theophrastus (you know, the guy who co-founded and then replaced Aristotle as head of the Peripatetic school of philosophy back in 323 B.C.) There are indeed 35 species in the Basil family of plants, ranging from annuals right through perennials and into shrubs. The one Im interested in though is a tender annual here in zone 4 and is perhaps the most important culinary herb in my repertoire. Im going to ignore for the moment the other Basil members including O. tenuiflorum, the Hindu Sacred Basil. Sacred Basil is used quite extensively in India during funeral rites as an emblem of good luck and is also used in anti-malarial fumigation. Other species such as O. kilmandschaicum (Camphor Basil) are mostly used for medicinal purposes when treating stomach aches and colds. Let me give you some easy growing tips. The first is that the seed is extremely easy to germinate. Sow thinly in a warm spot (it doesnt grow well in cold soil). You can abuse this seed in other ways but do keep it warm if you want to see it grow. Barely cover it with soil. If you cover it too deeply, it will not germinate well. Keep moist not swampy. Water with warm water to really bring the seeds along. Grow in as much sun as you can provide. Thats it. Its easy and as long as you keep the seeds and developing seedlings warm, theyll be fine. Sow indoors approximately four to six weeks before you want to plant them outside or alternately, sow outside after the soil has well warmed up. Once the plant is twelve to eighteen inches tall, harvest regularly all summer to keep new tender growth being produced. Secured Loan For The Self-Employed: Ready Money For The Entrepreneurial Mind

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ann_Gibson]Ann Gibson Self- employed people consist the majority of the workforce in UK. They control a vital part of the countrys economy. A self-employed person works for himself/herself. Not joining any organization as an employee, he or she doesnt draw regular salaries. The trade or business they profess individually or by forming a small business derives the income of the self-employed people. Though, it gives an entrepreneurial gratification, and higher rate of returns than those having a salaried employment, but the payments are irregular and one often has to go without work for days or even months. The financial condition can deteriorate very fast, if a self-employed person with a shaky bank balance runs into rough weather. Secured loan for the self-employed can bail out such an aggrieved person. Many situations can demand urgent financial inputs from self-employed persons. It could be some vital investment, or to meet some temporary cash flow crisis, to buy a car, or take that much needed vacation - it could be anything, which financially bothers the self-employed person. The most pressing problem is the urgent need of money. The major impediment, which the lenders feel while they consider lending to self-employed people is the lack of a regular income. Unlike salaried people, they do not get monthly paychecks. So, in many cases, their repayment capacity is very much subdued. The collateral clause satisfied by a secured loan for the self-employed, pacifies the average lender and he provides the loan despite a lack of regular income. The collateral can be the house, the car, a property, the business premises or any home equity held by the self-employed person. Since the collateral is offered, the interest rates on secured loans for the self-employed are lower than the unsecured ones. Secured loans for the self-employed can provide a large sum to the borrower provided the lender is satisfied with the value of the collateral offered. A diverse spectrum of professionals like doctors, painters, writers, mechanics, florists, beauticians, hairdressers etc. take such loans. The profession of the self-employed is not given much importance while giving a secured loan for the self-employed as long as the collateral satisfies the lender. However, the credit history of such borrowers carries a lot of weight with the lenders. Any self-employed person who offers the sufficient collateral and has a good credit record to supplement his case can get a good loan offer within the minimum possible time. Whereas, a borrower with insufficient collateral and poor credit rating is more or less doomed to get a curtailed offer with high interest rates and tougher repayment options. The drawback of secured loans for self-employed is that if the borrower is unable to meet the repayment schedule and persistently defaults on payments, he might loose his home or the collateral to the lender permanently. So, to mitigate the occurrence of such a tragedy, the borrower should go for the minimum possible loan amount and that too after considering his repayment capacity and doing a cash-flow analysis. Many borrowers, who take a secured loan for the self-employed, when they find that their cash inflow is not sufficient enough to repay the installments and meet their daily expenses, go for a regular employment. This is not stated to discourage any self-employment, but just to underline the fact that the borrower should do everything to repay his loan properly, else the collateral may be repossessed. As true with all types of purchases, getting the best deal on any secured loan for the self-employed also comes after a consistent scouring of various offers. Just skimming the surface of offers, and reaching at a conclusion might spring up unpleasant surprises for the borrower at later stages. Taking a secured loan for self-employed, is vital to the financial recuperation for the borrower. The funds should be used efficiently and solely to fulfill the intent. Any wasteful meandering from the desired course will inevitably make the things worse for the borrower. Loan borrowing is like once in a life time decision and much is at stake. It is indeed not a good thing that many people are misguided into taking loans that are not appropriate to their financial situation. This leads to many allied misgivings. As a financial consultant the only driving force of Ann Gibson is to provide proper knowledge. Free Online Chat! What Are The True Costs Of Free

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By William Lezubski As you’re surfing the Internet and coming across titles claiming free online chat? What does this mean, and is it really for free? Most dating chat rooms and free online dating chat lines allege that the service they offer have no charge, but as you get familiar with a particular chat room, you soon find out there is a price associated to their online service! Now it all depends on what you’re looking for in a chat service, and in order to find the right one for you without paying un-necessary fees! You should ask yourself, is this going to be for the free games, or for the entertainment of a chat room, where you can meet, and talk to interesting people from all over the world? Do you want to go a step further and get involved in free dating, and try and meet someone special for a possible love match. Chat rooms can be a great place to get your voice out into the world and get noticed; however, our goal is to inform you of your options, and that not all chat sites are created equal. When searching the mass Internet highway, you will come across so many online sites that will entice you to join their free services, and do their best to get you to sign with them and pay an upgrade fee. If you’re truly comfortable with the service they’re providing, then we say go for it! What we do suggest though, is make sure you read their individual privacy statements, and their terms and conditions. If you’re not happy with any of the services, they should have some form of guarantee to refund part or all your money, so this way you will not receive any surprises if you’re not completely satisfied. We always suggest if you’re looking for specific chat information, do your research, and only get involved with well-known reputable chatrooms and personals sites! It’s a fact that if you want a quality chat room, online dating, and online services that will meet your desired needs, you will have to upgrade at some point. So if you choose a site such as Yahoo Personals, AmericanSingles, eHarmony, Date.ca, or any other reputable company online, they will provide all the information up-front and let you know exactly what to expect with your future online chat experiences! You Can Grow Your Own Herb Garden - Part 2

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Melinda Robinson Setting it all up If you have chosen an outdoor garden, keep it small at first. 4′ x 4′ is a good size for a novice herb gardener, and will enable you to grow about 8-9 different herbs. Select a sunny spot which is easily accessible with a hose or sprinkler. Most herbs need lots of sunlight to thrive. Those which may require less light can be strategically placed so that shade from taller plants or nearby trees falls on them, or you can set up a separate garden for them in a shady area. Work the soil in your chosen area. Dig up and discard any large rocks, break up solid chunks of dirt, take patches of grass to other parts of your yard that are bare and can use the help. You can, in some cases, plant directly in your soil but enriched soil really is best for gardening. I prefer to make a raised bed, then fill with a mixture of approximately 60% topsoil and 40% peat. To make a raised bed, construct a box in the spot where it is to stand. One way to do this uses landscaping timbers along with large screws and is very easy. Make the box at least two timbers high. Screw landscape timbers together with 3″ coarse-thread deck screws. Put the timbers together by first drilling a 3/8″ hole halfway through the timbers themselves. Otherwise, the screw will not go through the landscape timber. CAVEAT: In some areas of the United States, the available landscape timbers may be infested with Formosan termites. DO NOT use these. Alternatives include left-over deck material or 2×4s. Fill in the box with the topsoil and peat. You can figure out how many bags of topsoil you need either by judging with your eyes or figuring out how many cubic feet are in the area for your garden and then buying the corresponding cubic feet of soil. Peat generally comes in compressed blocks; you will probably need approximately 1.65 cubic ft. per 4′ x 4′ area. For an indoor garden, you can use all kinds of pots and containers, as long as they retain moisture while allowing excess water to drain away. Terra cotta pots are probably not a good idea because they tend to absorb water instead of allowing it to stay in the soil. Fill containers with a topsoil and peat mix, just like the outdoor garden. You might even try an outdoor container garden. This is an excellent option especially if you live in an apartment, have limited outdoor space or want to start very small. Herbs can be grown individually or you can get a very large pot and combine herbs. If you want to combine herbs you can try themed pots. How about a Kitchen Garden with basil, dill, savory, mint and chives? Have fun making your own combinations based on your own preferences and needs. The Planting Seeds or established plants - which should you choose? In the case of the novice herb gardener, I suggest plants. You can find these at reliable nurseries in your area and sometimes in catalogs. Seeds can be unreliable, often not sprouting at all and therefore frustrating to the gardener who is excited about seeing life spring into being. When using seeds, be aware that seedlings often need to be thinned — this means removing those that are too close together and either replanting them or throwing them out. Seedlings are very delicate and don’t always live when replanted, another frustration for the budding herb gardener. Later on, after your herb garden has become established and you are more confident, you can use seeds. By that time, you will have become accustomed to working with the plants and will have a “feel” for how to treat them. Some herbs come in peat pots which can be directly transferred to the ground; however, I have never had much luck with these and recommend taking the plant out of these types of containers. (I understand there are some newer plantable pots from Bonnie Plant Farm (http://www.bonnieplants.com/), but I havent tried them yet.) When removing herbs from their pots, gently squeeze all around the container to loosen the dirt. Tear away the pot or ease the plant out if the pot is unbreakable. Very gently loosen the dirt around the roots by scrunching it with your fingers and tapping it lightly against your hand. Make a hole in the soil about the size of the root ball and place the herb plant into this hole. Hold the plant with one hand while scooping earth around it with the other. Firmly but gently pack the dirt around the plant. Don’t pack the dirt too tightly as plants need to “breathe”, something they can’t do if the soil is too tight around their roots. Most plants come with plastic markers that tell you what kind of plant it is, the plant’s light and water requirements, and sometimes how much room the plant needs to grow. For a basic 4′ x 4′ starter garden, place three plants equidistant from each other at each side, leaving a good 4 inches from the sides of the box. This will leave enough room for one or possibly two plants in the middle. Don’t throw away those plastic markers that identify the plants. Instead, put them into the ground near the plant itself so that you always know which plant is which. After you have all the herbs in the ground, water the area gently yet thoroughly. When watering your herb garden, it is best to soak the soil deeply. Allow the water to run down deep into the Earth, wetting the roots of the plants completely. Deep watering like this encourages strong, stable root systems. If you give your herb garden a cursory watering, only wetting the top layer of soil, the roots of your plants may close to the surface, become weak and die. Soils, the Natural Solution

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Jody Taberner Any soil type-clay, sand or loam-will benefit from the addition of organic matter. In a clay soil, the addition of organic matter opens up the tightly packed particles, allowing for water and air to penetrate easier. In a sandy soil, organic mater adds nutrients and body to the soil, improving its capacity to hold water. Loam is what is considered the ideal soil. The addition of organic matter will keep it in the best shape, attracting worms into your soil and keeping it rich and healthy. So what sort of organic matter is best? Any and lots of it. Manure, straw, hay and compost. When it comes to manure, unlike vegetables, fresh is not best. Fresh manure might not do much harm to your soil but it can burn or kill your plants.Be especially careful of fresh chicken manure, let it age for at least 12 months to let out some of the ammonia and uric acid. Also be careful of applying large amounts of chicken manure to sandy soil, as it can possibly cause potassium toxicity. Personally, I like cow manure and horse manure. They are milder and have a greater amount of fibrous material in them. If you are collecting the manure yourself, check with the owner that the manure making machines havent been wormed recently, as parasitic worming chemicals not only kill intestinal worms, but kill the good old, hard working garden worms as well. Straw and hay are normally used as mulch before they are dug into the soil after they decompose somewhat. This is the best way to use straw and hay and you get two uses for the one price. Most straws and hay add little or no nutrient value into the soil, but are great for improving soil structure. If you got for pea straw or lucerne hay, both of these have the benefit of adding nitrogen as well as structure. Compost is probably the best addition of all, with the bonus that you can make it yourself. It has already decomposed, so there is no temporary lock up of the nutrients or minerals in the soil while it breaks down. It doesnt matter if it is home made or store bought, just keep adding it to the soil year after year. In stores, you are likely to come across two types of compost-garden mix and mushroom. Garden mix compost is usually fairly neutral as gar as the pH goes, but mushroom compost tends to be on the alkaline side, so should be avoided in beds that contain acid loving plants like azaleas and camellias. Also avoid it if our soil is highly alkaline naturally. When you feed your plants, keep in mind the organic fertilisers made from a mixture of manure, bone meal, straw and hay. They not only feed your plants a balanced diet of the essential nutrients and minerals, they will also benefit the soil structure as they break down. Where as chemical fertilisers give no benefit to the soil, and often give a harsh, sudden feed, leading to soft growth that is delectable to insect pests.Worm castings are another great organic addition and are a brilliant way to recycle your kitchen scraps. A worm farm is easier, quicker and more practical for many people over composting and you wont end up with a pile of sludge or rock hard rubble if you get the layering, watering or aeration wrong. Organic matter is the way to go if you want to improve your soil. There are chemical alternatives that will give you a quick fix for a limited time, but a natural solution is best to get your soil up to scratch and keep it that way. Have It All With An Online Business Degree

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Amber C. Smith Online degrees have gained a lot of popularity over the last decade, especially for business professionals. By allowing you to do your work anytime without having to sit in a classroom, these programs have made it possible for full-time business professionals to go back to school easily. Traveling Professionals In the past, many business professionals were unable to get advanced degrees because they traveled so often. Online degrees allow these professionals to get a degree with ease. Since you may spend half of your week in airports, you need to be able to still take a class. With online classes, you can work from anywhere with your laptop and Internet access - the airport, a hotel, an airplane. Time Management The other great part about online degree programs is that the classes usually only run for about 6 weeks at a time. That way, if you have a big project coming up during one six-week time period, you can simply not take a class then and focus solely on work. You can more efficiently balance both school and work with online programs. School From Home Saturday mornings evenings are important times of the week for businesspeople. For once, we don’t have to get up and commute into the office or spend the evening driving around. Online classes allow you to do your work from home and meet with your classmates and teacher virtually. You can save time and money by taking a class online. Get A Free Degree Many companies are more likely to pay for employees’ degrees if they take classes online. Sometimes schools can actually work out a bargain with online universities so that their employees get lower tuition rates and other discounts. Why Get an Online Degree? So, why is an online business degree better than a traditional degree? Going Wireless - Using Your Cell Phone for Broadband Access

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Daniel_Swensen]Daniel Swensen With wireless hotspots becoming ever more common, getting Internet access while traveling is easier and more convenient than it’s ever been. But if you’re traveling or working on the go, there will always be times when you can’t find a wireless hotspot, or even a place to make a dial-up connection. This is where your trusty cell phone can come in very handy. Many modern cell phones can be used for wireless Internet access when tethered to a laptop or used in conjunction with a wireless card or broadband access card– even when you’re nowhere near any conventional broadband access. Enabling Broadband Access on Your Cell Phone There are two basic routes to getting connected via your cell phone: tethering your cell phone directly to your PC, or using a broadband access card. To get Internet access with your cell phone, you will need a laptop computer (of course) and a dual-mode cell phone. A dual-mode (or web-enabled) phone is equipped with a data port for syncing with personal computers, and is capable of sending both voice and data. Most modern digital cell phones are dual-mode; check with your cell phone carrier or do some research on the Web if you’re not certain about yours. You will also need a USB cable or special connection kit (such as the Verizon Wireless Mobile Office Kit). If you have a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone and laptop, or a laptop with infrared capability, you may be able to do away with the cable entirely; if you have a broadband access card, you may not even need your cell phone. Your mileage will vary, of course, according to your cell phone carrier and cell phone model, so some homework will probably be necessary. The LG Vx6100 cell phone, for example, can connect to a laptop via USB cable and VZ Manager software (this process is called “tethering”) and can connect to the Internet anywhere there is a Verizon Wireless signal. Fortunately, Verizon incurs no extra charges for Internet use (beyond normal airtime), bypassing the need for any monthly ISP fees. Playing Your Wireless Card On the other hand, if your model of cell phone doesn’t come with Internet capability, you might be able to use an broadband access card from your cell phone carrier to give your laptop WWAN (wireless wide area network) capability. Sony’s Vaio notebook series, for example, offers wireless cards using Cingular’s EDGE technology, such as the Sony Ericsson GC83 and the Sierra Wireless AirCard 775, which both offer Internet access on Cingular’s wireless network. The wireless card fits into the laptop’s PC card slot and allows connection to the internet via the cell phone carrier’s data network. The wireless card option, unfortunately, can be a tad more expensive; broadband access cards range in price from $192 for a GC83 to $265 for a Sierra Wireless AirCard). The good news is, a [http://www.wirefly.com/]broadband access card can often be picked up at online cell phone retailers for a substantial discount, or even as a free perk, when subscribing to a new data service plan from a wireless carrier. Broadband Access That Goes Where You Go In most cases, using your cell phone is definitely the shrewder option, as it generally requires no extra equipment, and you may be able to avoid any extra charges for Internet use, depending on which cell phone carrier you have. A [http://www.wirefly.com/catalog/cingular_wireless/Sierra_Wireless/]wireless card, however, can be a great boon if you’re a business traveler or take frequent road trips. Connection speeds are often slower than DSL (60 to 80 kbps, by most reports) but are usually significantly faster than dialup. The biggest advantage to using your cell phone for broadband access is the freedom — no more paying outrageous fees for a hotel’s dialup connection, no more driving around searching for a proper hot-spot. If your current cell phone isn’t Internet-capable or if you’re in the market for a broadband access card — this might be just the excuse you need to upgrade. Choose The Right Hair Product For You - Or Pay The Price

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

By Michael Barrows Choosing the right hair product for your particular hair style and texture can be confusing, especially with all of the hair care product advertisements we are bombarded with on a daily basis. With each commercial, each glossy ad, and each retail display case, companies do their best to convince us that their hair product has just what it takes to take our Medusa locks and turn them into tresses fit for the runway. But can they really do all that they promise? And how do you know which ones are worth investing in and which ones belong in the recycling bin? Granted, hair products can do wonders when it comes to making your do look the best that it can. But you need to choose the right products or you else you may find yourself rinsing your money right down the drain with your latest expensive hair care product. Must have hair products Depending on your hair type, there are several hair products that are essential for everyone. First, you need a good shampoo that is tailored to your specific hair type. While you don’t have to spend a lot of money here, make sure to choose a hair product that contains no waxy substances. Waxy substances are used in many of the over-counter hair care products on the market today. If you are unsure which ones contain wax, stick with a professional shampoo. Truly professional shampoos can be found in salons only. Next, you will need a professional conditioning hair product. If you need to cut costs by purchasing an over-the-counter hair care product, do it with the shampoo, not with your conditioner. Yes, you may spend a few extra dollars, but your hair will thank you for it. Make sure that your conditioner is tailored to your specific hair type. For example: If you have chemically damaged hair, choose a hair product that repairs and strengthens damaged hair. Lastly, you will need various styling hair products. The ones you choose will depend largely on your style. A good rule of thumb to follow is this: use mousse for light, carefree and blow-dried styles; gel for curly and wet-looking styles; and pomade for textured, funky and spiked styles. A hair spray with the desired hold should be used to finish off each style. Expensive verses inexpensive hair care products I’m a firm believer in that you get what you pay for, but that line seems to get blurred when dealing with professional hair products. Most people believe that when they buy hair products from salons that they are going to end up paying a great deal of money for something that they can pick up in the corner drug store for half the price. But this is not the case. The main differences between professional and non-professional hair care products are in the quality of the products, not the pricing. I have seen high-quality professional hair products sell for as little as $5 a bottle, the same price that you would pay for many non-professional products. So, you can get a great deal on professional products. The bottom line is that no matter what the price, professional is better. Now, are high-priced professional hair products better than the inexpensive ones? The answer is surprisingly no.
