By Ellen Smithies Sometimes it seems as though everything is out to thwart your desire to have that beautiful, healthy, green carpet of lawn. Despite your efforts it is still patchy, brown and attacked by weeds. But dont give up. It may not be too late. Most gardeners dont mind the odd weed as long as the lawn still looks pretty good. However remember that the odd weed in spring could be a large infestation by midsummer if you dont deal with it. If you mow the lawn once a week you will remove most of the flower stems before they can set seeds. However, many of the lawn weeds grow flat and do not produce flowers on long stems, so these will still flower and set seeds no matter how often you mow. Other methods are needed to treat these weeds. Remember, the earlier you attack the weeds the better as One years seeding makes for seven years weeding! The best way to keep your lawn looking great is to keep the grass plants healthy, and then they are less likely to let weeds and pests take over. So first of all take care of the basic needs of your lawn. If a lot of weeds pop up it could mean that your grass is weaker than it should be. If your lawn is too dry, start with a thorough watering to a depth of 200mm is recommended. Deep watering done less often is better for your lawn grass than if you water a little and often. It helps it to develop a strong, deep root system that makes the plants stronger and less susceptible to drought. Or alternatively, if you have a persistent problem with a waterlogged lawn you may need to consider laying drainage for which you should consult a professional. Feeding your lawn with the appropriate nutrients will also make the grass stronger. In spite of trying to make your grass plants as healthy as possible, you are still sure to get some weeds growing in it. Weeding is an ongoing process, but shouldnt take much time once you establish a healthy lawn. Grass, and especially the modern mixtures, is very competitive and crowds out most weeds. In a healthy lawn weeds arent usually much to worry about. Simply pull up any weeds that show up. As you see weeds appearing, dig them up and youll keep your lawn weedless with a minimum of effort. Practically speaking though, you will only do this if you have only a few weeds to remove. Constant vigilance is the key to success with this type of weed control. If your weed problem is larger, spray individual weeds with a low-toxicity herbicide. Dont spray the entire lawn unless you have weeds throughout it. You will damage, and could kill dry, dormant or stressed grass if you apply a lawn weeder over the whole lawn. Lawn weedkillers are powerful chemicals and you should always follow the manufacturers instructions for preparation, using, storing and disposing of them. Never use more than directed or add a bit more just in case. You should also identify the sort of grass you have as some types can be damaged by MCPA and dicamba, which are the active ingredients in many weedkillers. Be careful not to allow pets or children near the lawn if youve recently sprayed it. The best way to minimise the amount of chemicals you use is to spot-treat weeds. Use a pump-action sprayer and walk backwards, up and down the length of the lawn spraying a shot of chemical onto each weed. Hold the nozzle as close as you can to the weed and release with a low pressure to minimise spray drift. It does take longer to do this way but it is more thorough and better for the environment. If you tip a bottle of red food colouring or add some wetting agent into the mix, it is easier to see where you have already sprayed. After a couple of weeks youll be seeing results. If there are still a few weeds youve missed, dig them out or do the spot treatment again. Remember if you can kill the weeds before they flower and seed, youre a long way towards having a much smaller problem next spring. Occasionally you may find a nasty, particularly virulent weed takes over your lawn in which case you need to find out the specific treatment for it from your local garden centre. An example of this is Soliva, also known as lawn burweed, spurweed, bindii, or onehunga weed. It is low growing, has feathery leaves and produces seeds with a short spine on them, which stick into bare feet when you walk on the plants, a particularly unpleasant experience. Although it is only an annual weed it seeds profusely, and its method of spreading by sticking to feet is extremely successful. It requires a targeted weed killer to be applied at a particular time of the year to be effective against it. Weed and Feed products are not generally recommended. For instance, the best time for spraying weeds is not generally the best time for fertilizing your lawn. Also it is unwise to spray unnecessary herbicide over your whole lawn when only a small patch may be infected with weeds. One concern with the hose-on products is spray drifting onto surrounding shrubs. Its hard to apply these products just to the lawn. Applying fertilizer, herbicide and pesticide where and when it is needed is a better lawn care strategy. So even if your lawn is less than perfect now, dont give up. By Debbie Wright Many would agree there is a need for Black men and women to come together and work towards healing our relationships. Black people have the lowest marriage rates and the highest divorce rates. Where approximately 60% of white adults marry, only 40% of Black adults marry. And only one-third of Black children grow up in two parent homes. Passing blame and point fingers only hinders our progress. We need to come together and communicate openly and honestly to figure out ways to bridge the communication gap that destroys our relationships. For the past three years, I have been involved with forming roundtable discussion groups titled, ‘Withholding the Ring’ that addresses the low marriage rate among African Americans. I have met several Black women in their late thirties and even early forties that are worried about their prospects of ever getting married. Some of these women have completely given up on their marriage ideals and opted to have children outside of marriage. The prevailing message suggests that it is more likely for Black women to become mothers than wives. The roundtable discussions I facilitate provide safe environments for men and women to honesty discuss the issues that affect how we relate to one another. The men have reported to me that the events leave them truly affected by how their non-committal behavior affects women. And some of the women have come back to me and confessed that they did not realize how much they truly needed their men until we all came together and truthfully communicated. I would like to share some of the events that take place during these roundtable discussions in hopes of inspiring others to take up the cause. These are not dating events but rather bonding events that bring Black men and women together as friends first. The focus is never on ‘hooking up’ but rather on how we can build stronger, trusting, lasting relationships. Ice BreakerThe event begins with a series of icebreakers. One of my favorite icebreakers is when everyone has to exchange a friendly hug after introducing themselves. The participants are also asked to state what they hope to take away from the discussions. Ground RulesWe go over brief rules of conduct prior to the discussions. There are also handouts provided, that remind the participants to be respectful in their comments and responses. OpenersIn the beginning, some folks may be on edge, not really knowing what to expect, so I try to make the discussion fun and interactive. A fun opener is when the men are asked to place questions in a container addressed to the women and the women place their questions in a separate container addressed to the men. The questions are passed around the table, which affords everyone the opportunity to participate in the conversation and it serves as a good way to get everyone warmed up. ExercisesI plan several exercises during the roundtable discussions but a favorite is what I call “Love Affirmations”. I ask the men and women to pick names from separate containers. The women will choose men and the men will choose women. The men are asked to get down on bended knee and profess their love for Black women and the women in exchange profess their love for Black men. They must each begin their statement with “I love you Black Man because” and they are left to fill in the blank. This has nothing to do with romance. I designed this exercise to encourage an atmosphere of unity and to drive home the message that this is not a women vs. men forum. “Love Affirmations” is always a hit and never fails to draw a few tears. But, they are good tears. Healing tears that bring us closer to understanding how Black men and women can improve their relationships. So, that’s a quick run through of some of the techniques I use to encourage the dialogue. Seniority was the standard for upward mobility, but that was long ago. Survival today takes a lot more. If you have a job, youre probably working harder and longer than you were ten years ago, earning fewer pay raises, benefits and languishing on the promotion stepladder. People used to have career master-plans: Get a degree, get a job, and retire with a pension and full benefits. Today, career planning is an oxymoron. Technology, reengineering, and a global economy have altered the career landscape. To survive, you have to learn to manage your career and your life in a much different workplace. You must understand that there is less loyalty and trust. Employers and employees today dont expect lifelong commitments from each other anymore. Now you have the freedom to choose your own path. There are fewer and fewer opportunities for upward mobility and downsizing means survivors usually work more. If youre in management youll have to find new ways to motivate others as well as yourself. Companies today, only want you as long as you add value to them. Some companies offer employee training to enhance and develop marketable skills, while others offer employment on a project-by-project basis. You have to ask yourself some important questions: Do you love your job but have little faith in your employer? Do you hate your job but are afraid to change because you think it provides you with security? Whatever combination describes you, its time to evaluate your choices. You could stay in your job. Learn the business and become more involved. You could change jobs within the company by expanding your networks. You have the option to move to another company, but before you leave make sure you have another job lined up before you leave. Never burn your bridges. Another choice is to start your own business, but if you do this I advise that you keep your daytime job while youre building it. If youre going to succeed in todays business world you need to fine-tune your personal skills by rethinking the way you look at stress. Most jobs have high stress. Since you cant avoid it, learn how to harness it to your advantage. Identify the types of stress that are inherent to your job and imagine how youd deal with the worst-case scenario. Then do something. If you feel left out of the decision-making loop, give your opinion anyway. Talk over your ideas with your boss and center the discussion on answers rather than complaints. You should learn to address any conflicts with your co-workers or colleagues by modifying your own behavior rather then expecting the other person to change. In addition to our jobs we have plenty of stress in our personal lives as well so you must be able to strike a balance between your professional and personal commitments. Get help to control any negative habits, like excessive drinking, that interfere with your job performance. If you have reached a plateau in your job, change jobs, or start your own business. If youre unhappy that youre not getting enough recognition, then tell your boss you want more feedback. Much as you might like to, you cant stop time until you are caught up on your work. However, you can learn to manage your time better by beginning with your business goals. What are they? Make a list. Which are the most important? For example your goals could include, enhancing customer service and or the company bottom line. Show this list to your boss and ask whether youre on the right track. Make sure youre spending most of your time accomplishing your goals that have the highest priority. Spend a few minutes every morning to plan your day and go over your goals. Chances are that in todays fast changing job market your job will disappear in the next few years. So you had better get ready now for that possibility. You should create a file of documents you need, particularly appraisals, recommendations, employee handbooks, and your updated resume. Make a list of questions youll want to ask, such as how long youll receive benefits if you loose your job. Make sure your networks are up to date by making a list of all the people you know who have good jobs and stay in touch with them. Keep up with your profession by learning something new every day. You should always have a good handle on your finances. Know how long you could support yourself and your family without any income. One of your financial goals should be to have enough money in savings to keep you for at least six months should you suddenly be without an income. Good communication skills are an absolute must in the Information Age, yet so few people practice improving them and our schools are turning out more young people who have very low reading and writing skills. Heres a simple three step strategy for improving your speaking skills: First, you should prepare what you are going to say by practicing it over and over. Do this whether youre going to speak to your boss, your business team or giving a speech. You should develop a worksheet that identifies your objective, audience benefits, key points, illustrations, and closing. Always ask several people to listen to your practice run and have them critique your performance. Second, warm up before you begin your talk. Knowing your material and how youre going to say it allows you to concentrate on making eye contact with your audience. Always watch for things like mechanical gestures, vocal monotone, and distracting nervous habits. If youre speaking to a group of people it always helps to use visuals. Third, build on each presentation to improve the next one. Record your talk and if possible videotape it. This way you can study what you did right and wrong. Always ask for feedback from the audience and make notes on what you need to improve. Being able to write well is perhaps even more important than being able to speak well, because the written word has permanence. One of the most important rules of effective writing is to write as though youre speaking directly to the reader. Get your message in the first paragraph. Dont make readers hunt for your objective. Make your message fun to read. Use quotes, facts, and anecdotes and when its appropriate drop in charts and other visuals to add interest. If youre writing a long report, organize it by sections and use headings and subheads. Using bullet points helps to set off important information. Be consistent in your writing. For example, if you list items beginning with action verbs, dont switch to nouns. Of all the communication skills listening is used the least but is by far the most important. Think of how much time each day you spend listening to your boss, your colleagues, and your family. If you are going to get the most out of each conversation, you must learn to listen well. When someone is talking to you, stop talking, both out loud and mentally. Look for the real meaning in what the other person is saying, by focusing on the content not the speaker. Dont let the person who is speaking overshadow your ability to hear what he or she is saying. This is why its always a good idea to take notes in a business meeting. Test your understanding by paraphrasing back to the other person what he or she has said to you. If you do understand, evaluate what was said and give feedback to the other person. Take action on what the other person has said. For example, if your boss has given you a directive and you understand it clearly, then act on what he or she has told you to do. The people who survive and excel in the 21st Century will be the people who have the best survival skills. These skills will enable you to not only prepare for the constant barrage of changes that will constantly hit you but it will enable you turn those changes into unlimited opportunities for success.
